The ARM architechture is great, the whole single board computer concept is exactly what is needed for a project like this. Lower power consumption, and small footprint. Too bad the ARM1136JFS or the ARM 1036JFS weren’t available for these applications. Onboard DSP among other desirable features. If I find any good designs I’ll let you know. Time to go digging through all my issues of circuit cellar!

Okay I found a System on Module board that has the ARM1136-J-FS processor, and it supports SD Flash. This is perfect.
Freescale i.MX31 System on Module
It’s nice and compact at 59.1mm by 76.2 mm which is 2.33″ by 3″, which is very small footprint.
The company also has a development kit available.
Hope this helps!

For a software test stack, you could create a device driver and basic GUI driven app for the Behringer iAXE 393 . It could even be integrated with a credit-card ARM SBC with a color LCD touchscreen interface running a nano-X or some such, that can be fastened to the bottom edge of the iAxe within fingertip range to debug Linux guitar applications prior to the final production of the Linux guitar hardware.

Hi, I am a guitar player and linux user. Today I use a V-Amp 2 for my sound. The project could include an effect box to be used on an existing guitar. I think an interesting hardware could be found at http://www.armadeus.org
I also look for multi-channel wireless sound transmission to avoid multiple cables aroud the mixer. perhaps Wireless USB…*
I’ll often come to the site an hope will have the time to contribute

Why not…

As a serious guitar player and professional geek, I have to suggest that, when looking at the overall picture of this project as opposed to the fascinating detail work of miniaturization and realization, nobody would buy this, with good reason. The end result will be expensive, fragile, and outdated in a few years. Far better to invest time in a Linux-driven portable effects processor/recorder that runs VST effects, which can be used by any instrument and for which a market demand already exists.

Especially the new verdex boards, with their tiny size, up to 600MHz processor, USB host functionality, audio interface and LCD drivers could make an awesome core for this project. Much lower current consumption than any PC based platform too.
